The past weekend was spent mostly listening to beautiful and (as supposed) somewhat melancholic alternative country music. The suppliers were Swedish musicians Kristofer Åström and Christian Kjellvander as well as the weekend’s peak performer Ryan Adams and his band The Cardinals. The first mentioned are on a joint tour across Sweden and this past Friday they played at Bongo Bar (a favourite spot in my home town, Jönköping) where I went with my friend M. It was lovely to be able to hear the music of Kristofer Åström live, after having listened to his albums for years. His song Defender touched me at the first listen five years ago, got a good grip and has not let go since. Now imagine if you will the pleasure in finally hearing the song live this past Friday. Joy!
Saturday took me to my friend F and her new husband in Gothenburg, or more accurately to the tiny village outside of Gothenburg where they have bought a house. F and I spent the weekend drinking wine, reminiscing and taking a refreshing walk in the woods right outside their house. The big finale was reached Sunday night when I finally had my very first - and oh so longed-for - meeting with Mr. Adams. The anticipation was almost too much to bear while waiting in the big concert hall. After what seemed like forever he finally appeared on stage and I was not disappointed. Even though he did not play La cienga just smiled, nothing could get me down after this perfect weekend. A weekend in the spirit of melancholy; lovely!
